There’s something about fall that makes us want to get in the car, turn on a good playlist and head somewhere with colorful trees, a walkable Main Street and a coffee shop we’ve never tried.

Luckily, Cincinnati is surrounded by small towns that are perfect for exactly that.

You don’t need to book a hotel or drive several hours to get that Hallmark-movie-in-October feeling. Within roughly an hour or so of Cincinnati, you can find historic downtowns, antique shops, bike trails, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, river views and some beautiful places to see fall color.

And timing matters: fall color around Cincinnati typically reaches its peak around the third week of October, although you can enjoy changing leaves throughout much of the month.

Here are some of the best small towns near Cincinnati to visit this fall.

1. Loveland, Ohio

Best for: Biking + a walkable fall afternoon

Loveland might be one of the easiest fall day trips from Cincinnati because you can park the car and spend most of the day exploring on foot or bike.

Historic Downtown Loveland sits along the Little Miami River and the Little Miami Scenic Trail, which stretches for more than 78 miles. From downtown, you can head south toward Milford or north toward Morrow before returning for lunch, coffee or shopping.

Recent local coverage highlights just how easy it is to build a full day around the trail, independent shops, restaurants and breweries downtown.

And if you want to make the day a little more unusual, Loveland Castle Museum gives you an actual castle to explore along the Little Miami River.

Perfect fall day: Coffee → bike or walk the trail → explore downtown → lunch → ice cream or drinks before heading home.

2. Lebanon, Ohio

Best for: Historic charm + apple orchard season

Lebanon feels made for fall.

The historic downtown is filled with shops, restaurants and beautiful architecture, while the surrounding countryside gives you plenty of opportunities to add an orchard or pumpkin patch to your trip.

One of the biggest fall draws is Irons Fruit Farm, where the season typically brings apples, pumpkins, a corn maze, cider donuts and other classic fall activities.

Downtown, you can explore the local shops, visit the Warren County Historical Society or even take a seasonal excursion aboard the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad.

And if you've never eaten at the Golden Lamb Lebanon oh, fall is a pretty good excuse. The historic inn and restaurant has been operating since 1803.

Perfect fall day: Apple orchard → downtown shopping → historic train ride → dinner in Lebanon.

3. Waynesville, Ohio

Best for: Antiques + peak small-town fall vibes

If your ideal fall day involves historic buildings, antiques and wandering around Main Street, head to Downtown Waynesville Ohio.

Waynesville is especially known for antiquing, and you'll find shops like Waynesville Antique Mall right in the downtown district. It's also close to Caesar Creek State Park, making it easy to combine a morning hike with an afternoon of shopping.

Fall also brings one of the town's signature events: the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival.

And if you prefer your fall activities slightly spooky, Waynesville has another claim to fame: ghost stories. The Museum at the Friends Home offers seasonal historic-haunt walking tours on select September and October evenings.

4. Milford, Ohio

Best for: An easy, close-to-home getaway

Milford is a great option when you want the small-town experience without spending much of the day driving.

Historic downtown Milford sits along the Little Miami River and has local shops and restaurants that make it easy to wander for a few hours.

The Little Miami Scenic Trail also connects Milford with Loveland, it's about 9.5 miles between the two, so ambitious visitors could turn this into a bike-and-small-town day trip.

Fall also brings farm activities around the Milford area, making it easy to combine downtown with pumpkins, a corn maze or hayride.

5. Augusta, Kentucky

Best for: Ohio River scenery + a quiet fall drive

Cross into Kentucky for a completely different kind of fall day.

Augusta sits along the Ohio River and has the kind of historic, slow-paced atmosphere that makes you feel much farther from Cincinnati than you actually are.

Part of the fun is simply getting there. The drive along the river becomes especially pretty when the leaves begin changing, and you can even cross the Ohio River aboard the Augusta Ferry.

Once you're in town, walk the historic streets, enjoy the river views and, for the adults, stop at Augusta Distillery for a bourbon experience.

You can also continue along the river toward Maysville if you want to turn the outing into a longer road trip. Visit Cincy specifically recommends the scenic route through Augusta on the way to Maysville.

Perfect fall day: Scenic river drive → ferry → explore Augusta → lunch → river views → drive toward Maysville.

6. Yellow Springs, Ohio

Best for: Hiking + quirky downtown vibes

Yellow Springs is a little farther from Cincinnati, but it's worth the drive when you want a full-day fall adventure.

The town has an artsy, independent feel with galleries, boutiques and restaurants downtown, but the real fall attraction is the surrounding nature.

Glen Helen Nature Preserve sits right at the edge of town, and you can easily combine your visit with nearby Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park.

This is one we'd save for October when the leaves are changing.

Perfect fall day: Morning hike → downtown Yellow Springs → lunch → browse the shops → scenic drive home.

7. Maysville, Kentucky

Best for: History + a scenic river road trip

If you have an entire Saturday available, keep driving past Augusta and head to Maysville.

It's about an hour from the Cincinnati area and offers historic architecture, galleries, museums and Ohio River scenery.

The drive itself is part of the appeal in fall, especially if you take the river route and stop in Augusta along the way.

Rather than rushing through both towns, give yourself time to wander.

8. Rabbit Hash, Kentucky

Best for: The "Is this really a town?" experience

Rabbit Hash is tiny.

And that's exactly why it's fun.

This little Northern Kentucky river community is best known for its historic general-store atmosphere and quirky personality. It's the kind of destination where the road trip matters just as much as the destination.

Pair Rabbit Hash with a scenic drive through Northern Kentucky, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site or another nearby river town to make a full day of it.

Perfect fall day: Country drive → Rabbit Hash → Big Bone Lick → dinner somewhere in Northern Kentucky.

9. Hamilton, Ohio

Best for: Art + food + a more lively day trip

Hamilton is larger than some of the towns on this list, but it's still an easy option when you want to get out of Cincinnati for the day.

Spend time exploring downtown, check out the public art, grab lunch and walk along the Great Miami River.

This is a good pick if your group isn't necessarily interested in hiking, orchards or spending the entire day doing traditional fall activities.

10. Madison, Indiana

Best for: A longer fall road trip

Okay, we're stretching the definition of "near Cincinnati" a little with this one.

But if you want a true fall road trip, Madison deserves consideration.

The historic Ohio River town is known for its walkable downtown, architecture, shops and riverfront setting. Pair that with the changing leaves and the drive through southeastern Indiana, and it makes a great October getaway.

Give yourself the entire day, or turn it into an overnight trip.

When is the Best Time for a Fall Day Trip From Cincinnati?

September is great for early fall festivals, orchards and those first hints of cooler weather.

But if you're specifically chasing fall color, October is the month we'd circle.

Visit Cincy says fall colors in the region typically peak around the third week of October, making mid-to-late October an especially good time for scenic drives, hikes and small-town exploring.

Of course, Mother Nature doesn't take reservations, so timing varies from year to year.

One of the best things about living in Cincinnati is that you don't have to travel very far to completely change your scenery.

Pick a Saturday, choose a town you've never really explored, take the scenic route and don't over-plan it.

Find a local coffee shop. Walk Main Street. Stop at an orchard. Buy something you don't need at an antique store. Take pictures of the leaves. Find somewhere local for dinner.
